Alumni Panel: What Bayan Prepared Us For — and What We Had to Learn Ourselves
Five Bayan graduates return to campus for an honest conversation about career transitions, professional realities, and lessons learned.
Five Bayan College graduates gathered on campus for a candid alumni panel. The session, open to all current students, covered career transitions, unexpected challenges, and the practical value of their college education.
The panel included graduates now working in journalism, education, corporate communications, public sector roles, and creative industries. Each brought a different story and a different perspective.
What Prepared Them Well
All five panellists pointed to strong writing skills as their most transferable asset. The ability to structure ideas clearly, edit under a deadline, and adapt tone for different audiences came directly from classroom practice.
Writing is everywhere. Every job I have had since graduation has required it. Bayan gave me a base I did not fully appreciate until I needed it.

Critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to manage competing deadlines were also mentioned repeatedly.
What They Had to Learn Independently
The panel was equally honest about gaps. Salary negotiation, networking, managing workplace relationships, and understanding professional hierarchies were all mentioned as areas where they felt underprepared.
One participant suggested that practical career readiness sessions, including mock interviews and contract literacy, would be valuable additions to the college calendar.
Advice for Current Students

- Keep samples of your best work in an accessible portfolio.
- Stay connected to the Bayan alumni network after graduation.
The session ended with open questions and an invitation for students to connect with panellists through the alumni office.
